About Our Speaker

Kathy Zarsky is the founder of BiomimicryTX and a leader in biomimetic design. About 13 years ago, Kathy was in Veracruz Mexico at a workshop on biomimicry when she had a cascade of realizations about how we might redesign how we make things.

Kathy has thought a lot about our cultural norms around “creature comforts.”  We are a deeply visual species and in many ways, our world and culture have moved us away from our awareness of microclimates (i.e., temperatures), tactile objects, scents and how all of this feeds into the self-regulation of our nervous systems.

Biomimetic design is a way to bring us back to our world and allow our civilization to thrive as a regenerative influence on all life. Some questions Kathy will explore:

  • How might the exponential technologies we are building return us to our senses and feelings of connection with each other and with the natural world?
  • How might we make it a cultural norm to put down our distractions and cultivate a deeper awareness of the natural processes around us?
  • Through deep observation can we understand, perhaps even be mentored by the natural world?

About Our Chef

Steve Couch is a native of Detroit and has more recently called Grand Rapids, Los Angeles, and Phoenix home.

Chef Steve’s menus are inspired by his culinary globetrotting through over 35 countries and his emphasis on healthy, seasonal ingredients. More than anything, Steve is an explorer in every sense of the word.

He was featured on Food Network’s “Guy’s Grocery Games,” served as chef at the world-famous St. Andrews Link’s Trust Golf Course in Scotland, cooked for periods around London, and fed friends on tours through Africa and even at Burning Man.
